Early Hours Complications (Part 2)

Mission: Flight Of The Valkyries
Location: USS Tokyo Captains Quarters & Sickbay
Timeline: March 16th 2397 - 03:20

Three was no response from Nyx as she got to work even faster now, using a bulb to clear the airways even as she began a countdown to where she really needed to be worried. Now that the umbilical was cut, oxygen was required from the outside. The new vital signs in front of her were in red, the heart was beating, but at only sixty beats per minute and blood pressure was very low. Nyx rubbed at the baby's chest to try to stimulate the automatic intake of breath, then rubbed harder, still to no avail. The heartrate dropped even more as Nyx took a tri-ox hypo and set it to the lowest dosage, injecting the child to buy more time.

Her mind was racing as she frantically thought of what to do. O2 levels were higher now, but it was artificial. She keyed in a hope and removed her hands from around the child and hit the button. A small electrical charge ran through the infant and suddenly there was an intake of breath, but still no cry from them though the heartrate began to spike up.

Taiga's blood pressure started to hike up as she began to panic. "No... no... not another one... Please..." she stuttered. Then her eye lids fluttered and finally closed. Her expression fell limp, and the monitor began to blare out warning signs.

"Doctor Valentine, I need some help over here." Aria stated simply.

"Wait." Nyx snapped back, noting the pinking up of the infant, "One more moment." The vitals updated as respiration rate finally showed up on the readings along with a rise in heartrate and blood pressure and the limbs started to move around. She checked the settings on this bassinet of a bed and keyed for audible alarms, bringing the whole thing over while she moved back over towards Taiga.

"There's a bleed in here that I can't locate, Nyx, I've checked the incision and around and there's nothing, but the pressors are still showing an increased pressure." Aria was already pressing another hypospray against Taiga's neck and showed the setting on it to Nyx immediately after, who nodded back.

It was a rather hurried job as Nyx closed the uterine incision, but there wouldn't be an issue in the future and she'd check it out later, when there was less danger. A deeper scan was in progress, but she ignored the arriving results as she checked the currently cleared areas for signs of the bleeding, but the area was clear and she took the left side pressor offline to do a manual check there. The rush of blood into the abdomen was one of the answers she sought at least, "I need suction here, clear the field so I can investigate further.

As the blood was cleared away, the doctor started sorting through the organs as a grumbling came from behind her where the infant was, definitely a good sign. "I've got three point sources over here." She said in rapid-fire, "Spleen, two in the abdominal wall." She looked up, "Why is this happening? There's no reason for it." Her eyes went back down, "Keep clearing the area. Scalpel and be ready with sutures."

It was a long ten minutes as an emergency splenectomy was performed, but the human being didn't NEED a spleen, it would just be an addition to Taiga's medical file, but once the sutures were set and sealed, that would cut out one source. The other two were stopped by the expediency of heat-sealing and then regenerating the tissue, but Taiga's blood pressure remained low and she was still unconscious.

With a haunted look in her eye, Nyx looked at the chrono on the wall and saw that it was just after 0400 when she wiped her hands on a towel and stepped outside the operating room after checking on the infant in her basinet once more. She knew that she probably looked as if she'd been in a horror movie, but the husband needed to know, even as Aria was closing up the surgical area with a temporary seal. "Lieutenant, I need to update you on the condition of your wife and child."

Ryuuji looked up, dark circles around his eyes. He immediately jumped up to his feet. "What's going on doctor?" he asked simply.

“First the good news, both Taiga and your daughter are alive and stable for now.” Nyx had to take it one step at a time, “I had to perform a C-Section because the umbilical cord was wrapped around your daughter’s neck and it was cutting off blood flow to the brain. After birth and some treatment, she appears to be healthy and fine, but there are several additional tests I need to run before I will be happy with releasing her from care. As for Taiga, she’s in critical condition right now.”

"A daughter..." he said, sheer joy coming to his face. Quickly replaced by worry and concern at hearing about Taiga. "Critical condition? What happened?"

“I had to perform a splenectomy, removal of her spleen, because it was producing blood and I couldn’t stop it. That’s fine, the human body doesn’t absolutely need it, but she was also bleeding spontaneously from other locations and I think that I’ve dealt with all of those. I don’t know why she was and that’s what has me concerned.” Nyx reached out to place a hand on his forearm, “I know we are several hours away, but I want to take her to the nearest Starbase for treatment. I can’t justify keeping her here during whatever is coming up when the entire department will be needed to treat combat casualties. I’d like your consent, but frankly I don’t need it.”

Ryuuji didn't even give her chance to response. He instantly tapped his comm badge. "Takasu to Shuttlebay. Get a runabout prepped and ready for immediate take off. Captain Aisaka is needing to be transported to Starbase Forty Three. Medical Priority One." he said. "Doctor Valentine and the Medical Staff will be arriving shortly."

"Ackowledged Lieutenant Commander. Runabout Chitose will be ready upon your arrival." Came the response from the shuttlebay manager.

Ryuuji turned to Nyx. "Have her taken there. But I am coming with her." He said simply, his Starfleet duty and training kicking in. "In the meantime, I need to make a call to the Armitage. We need to recall Commander Johnson to take command of the Tokyo."

“It’ll be you three, a pilot and me.” Nyx stated simply, “I didn’t go stealing medical personnel for Tokyo just to drag them off the ship when they’re needed here the most. Hell, I don’t want to leave, but I don’t trust anyone else by themselves to handle the situation.” She made a move towards her office, she did at least have time to change into something less gore-covered, “We’ll be departing in ten minutes maximum, Lieutenant, if you’re not there, you’re being left behind.”

Ryuuji nodded. "Very well. I'll meet you at the runabout" he replied before turning around and hastily making his way towards the sickbay doors. A sheer look of determination on his face, ad for the first time in his life Ryuuji entered the well known state of 'Daddy Mode'.
