The Return
Location: USS Tokyo
Timeline: February 27, 2397
[USS Tokyo Bridge]
The Tokyo rushed at maximum warp back towards Starbase 234. Although they were just 'another starship', they had to do what they could to assist. Starbase 234 wasn't a huge Stardock class station, it was much smaller but still was home to several thousand people. That wasn't just the station crew, but civilians, visitors and people passing through. The base was much more than just a Starfleet Installation, it was a community in space and right now it was in danger of being destroyed.
Taiga sat in the center chair, her hands gripped firmly on the arms. "Jased, what's our ETA at Starbase 234?"
"Four minutes, thirty seconds," Lt. Yuvek snapped, his hands already disabling safety overrides across the propulsion systems.
"Push the engines past the red line if you have to!" Taiga ordered. "Drop us about fifteen thousand kilometers from the Heralds." She then looked back at Tactical. "Tell the TIC have the starfighters ready to launch once we drop out of warp. They'll be deploying once we get there, we'll go in together."
"Overriding engine limiters - pushing to warp nine point nine-five." The console screamed warnings as he forced the already-stressed warp coils beyond their rated capacity. "New ETA: three minutes, fifteen seconds." Lt. Yuvek reported.
His other hand pulled up the fragmentary data Starbase 234 had managed to transmit before their communications went spotty. "Tactical data from the starbase shows at least six Herald vessels - mix of raiders and frigates. They're concentrating fire on the station's shield generators." He said as he began rapid calculations, plotting attack vectors.
"Emergency deceleration programmed. Fighters can launch the moment we drop - they'll have clear approach vectors to the Herald flanks." The Helm Officer's voice carried urgent precision.
Connor went through the readings, "Starbase is holding up for now but they are really getting a beating, unsure how long before they give way."
"Nezuko, we're going to need all additional power shunted to shields and weapons." Taiga said. "Keep your eyes on those systems, we need to hit them fast and hit them hard!"
Nezuko nodded and started moving power from less critical systems, more than even a standard Red Alert required. Emergency battery power was also ready to be tapped.
“Shields at one-two-zero percent,” her console said aloud. Phaser capacitors at double strength for initial volleys, but that power cannot be sustained beyond the first attack.
Talia sat in her seat taking in everything that was going on.
"Do we know what we're looking at so far as reinforcements are concerned?" Chisato inquired.
"We are the reinforcements..." Taiga stated simply.
"When haven't we been outnumbered." Thomas replied as he went over the scans. "The only thing standing is the starbase, everything else has been destroyed."
"Not going to be ideal..." Chisato lamented. "Do we know of any other ships that might be in range to intercept? Armitage, Broadsword, Kirishima, Europa, The Sullivans, or even the Zodiac, for that matter?"
"I have no idea Commander," Taiga said in response. She felt her grip tightening on her chair arms as they approached the area.
The Tokyo dropped out of warp, just where Taiga had ordered.
"Heavens..." Chisato gasped as she took in the devastation that lay before them.
The viewscreen showed the Starbase in the distance. Several Herald ships swarming around it. Five Federation Starships were also there, one of them was drifting after clearly having taken a beating. Fire could be seen billowing out of its hull. The other four were also damaged but we still putting up a fight. The shimmer of shields and phasers could be easily spotted on the viewscreen as both sides exchanged fire.
"Launch Fighters, have them fall into formation on port and starboard. We'll go in as a group."
[Flight deck]
Fubuki gripped her sticks. "Ok people. Lets go!"
"Copy that, Snowflake," Nozomi radioed as she hurriedly conducted her second pre-flight check that day. "Triumph Squadron, standing by."
"Ducati Squadron, standing by," echoed Vyse.
It had been a miracle of miracles, but Grace had found that her fighter had been refueled and rearmed despite her being taken off of flight status. Not that she'd obeyed once the ship had gone to red alert. She ran through a rapid preflight to make sure her ship was capable of combat as she slipped her flight helmet on, then keyed the comm and hesitated a moment, =A=Foch 3-1-2, where do you want me, Snowflake.=A=
"Stick close to me." Snowflake replied.
"Copy, I'm your wing." Grace settled back into her seat and prepared for the launch.
[Bridge]
Taiga pressed a button on her chair arm controls and brought up a tactical view of the area on the viewscreen. "Take us in." She ordered. "Starfighters, target the smaller enemy vessels. We'll take on the cruisers." She studied the tactical view, there were several large cruisers accompanied by escorts and raiders. Hopefully the Tokyo could even the tides a little, even hold them off until more reinforcements arrive.
"Engaging," Lieutenant Yuvek responded tersely, his hands moving with practiced aggression across the helm controls.
The Tokyo surged forward as fighters streamed from the launch bays, forming up on their flanks. His console displayed the tactical nightmare before them - Herald cruisers bracketing the wounded starbase, their escorts harrying the two remaining Federation ships.
"Attack speed, bearing three-five-zero mark eight," he announced, angling their approach to split two of the Herald cruisers. "Weapons range in several seconds."
His fingers worked constantly, adjusting their trajectory to thread between incoming fire while maintaining optimal firing solutions. "Positioning for broadside attack run - you'll have full phaser array coverage on the lead cruiser."
The viewscreen showed the growing mass of the enemy formation, purple energy already lancing toward their position.
"Entering weapons range... now!" he called out to tactical.
"Firing at will," Connor called out from the tactical station. "I would suggest everyone pray to your gods right now... being this outnumbered..."
"Lt, you are now a bridge officer, keep your negative thoughts to yourself." Thomas scolded him. "Captain, permission to assemble a rescue team to go to the starbase. Recommend a full Marine squad armed to the teeth. Any medical personnel we can spare."
"Granted. Get over there and get as many people out as you can." Taiga replied.
"Take us in, nice and close. Have the Starfighters lay down cover fire." Taiga ordered quickly. She looked over at Thomas. "Go."
Nodding, Thomas tapped a few buttons on the chair, signaling to the marines onboard to assemble. It was quick, and to the point, and all the people they needed would be ready in record time.
Talia looked towards her husband she didn't need to say what she was thinking, her look alone told him to be careful. She gave Thomas a brief smile, she’d be keeping her senses trained on him as best as she could whilst he was off ship.
Taking one glance at Talia, and nodding, he gave a smile before the doors closed.
"Ma'am," Lieutenant Yuvek called out from his console, his attention splitting between his helm controls and the tactical display. "Recommend we coordinate attack patterns with the two surviving Federation ships. If we can synchronize our assault, we can concentrate fire and take down the Herald cruisers one at a time instead of spreading ourselves thin."
His hands continued their work across the console, maintaining their attack trajectory. "I can position us to form a crossfire with the nearest allied vessel - catch one of the Herald cruisers in a kill box between our combined firepower."
"Good idea." Taiga responded. "Nezuko, open a wide hail to those Starfleet ships on a priority one channel"
The Ops chief nodded, and a second later the comms system chimed. The channel was open.
"This is Captain Aisaka of the Tokyo. I'm taking command. I'm sending you attack formations, form up along with Tokyo and we'll beat these Heralds together." She indicated to tactical with her hand to send over the data.
"Sent and acknowledged," Connor replied as he awaited the formation data
Lieutenant Yuvek was working to integrate the other ships' positions into his navigation calculations. "Transmitting formation data now... sending it over to Tactical" he said as the other Federation vessels acknowledged receipt.
"USS Akio, USS Blackhawk, USS Cortana and USS Malinche confirming - they're moving into attack formation delta-three." He made rapid course adjustments, angling the Tokyo to take point position.
"I can put us in an optimal crossfire position with the other ships." The Helmsman suggested to Tactical. "The Herald cruiser on bearing two-seven-zero will be caught between us and the Malinche's starboard batteries."
Giving a nod. "I'm with you Lt." Connor replied, as he started targeting.
The Tokyo banked as Yuvek positioned them precisely where the formation required. "Akio is moving to cover our port flank - they'll prevent the Herald escorts from interfering while we concentrate on the cruiser."
"All Starfighters, engage the enemy escorts. Lets take that cruiser out!" Taiga ordered. "Go."
